Carling League Cup
Middlesbrough 2 Bolton Wanderers 1
Middlesbrough won the first trophy in the club’s 129 year history when they beat Bolton Wanders. A blistering start saw ’Boro 2–0 up inside seven minutes. Joseph-Desire Job opened the scoring with just two minutes gone then Boudewijn Zenden, on-loan from Chelsea, scored with a ‘double-hit’ penalty after Emerson Thome was adjudged to have fouled Job.

Kevin Davies pulled one back for Bolton, midway through the first half and Per Frandsen hit a post but ’Boro always seemed to have the upper hand and Steve McClaren become the first English manager since Brian Little in 1996 to win a domestic trophy, also the League cup. Gareth Southgate, who was in that Villa side under Little, lifted the trophy that took Middlesbrough into Europe in 2004–05.

FA Cup Final
Manchester United 3 Millwall 0
The final turned out to be as one-sided as neutral observers had feared. But it took until just before half-time for United to take the lead, with Cristiano Ronaldo heading home from a Gary Neville cross. Manchester United, in their 16th FA Cup Final, another record, were never troubled by Millwall, who were playing the first final in their 109 year history.

Despite their superiority United were denied by several good saves from Andy Marshall in the Millwall goal and the game wasn’t secured until Ruud Van Nistelrooy made it 2–0, from the penalty spot, after 64 minutes, after Livermore felled Giggs. Van Nistelrooy then tapped home, from a Giggs cross, in a suspiciously off-side position, with nine minutes left. It was the Dutchman’s 30th goal of the season, making him the first player in Manchester United history to hit 30 goals in each of three successive seasons. And United extended their own record of FA Cup Final triumphs to 11.
