| 2003 Cups and awards Worthington Cup Final Liverpool 2 Manchester United 0 Despite some sunshine the game was played under the closed roof at the Millennium Stadium but it was a poor game which resulted in Liverpool’s seventh League Cup success. Steven Gerrard opened the scoring with a shot that deflected off David Beckham. Jerzey Dudek then defied United’s response with excellent saves to deny Giggs, Van Nistelrooy and Scholes. Liverpool made United pay for not converting their chances with a Michael Owen goal, in the 82nd minute, to take the trophy. FA Cup Final Arsenal 1 Southampton 0 Arsenal reached their third consecutive FA Cup Final but it turned out to be a poor game. Antti Niemi, in his first season with the club was preferred to Paul Jones in goal but, paradoxically, the Finnish stopper had to go off injured, in the second half, and was replaced by the Welsh international. But Southampton were already 1–0 down having conceded a 38th minute goal to Robert Pires. Pires scored what proved the decisive goal after Freddie Ljunberg’s shot deflected into his path off Lundekvam and The Gunners went on to claim the FA Cup for the third time in six years.
