| November 2002 Two Michael Owen goals earn victory over West Ham and keeps Liverpool top. Manchester City beat West Brom to drop The Baggies a place, to 19th. Sunderland draw with Charlton and stay 18th. Bolton are bottom after they are beaten by Birmingham Second-placed Arsenal win for the first time in three games but it takes a Steve Marlet own goal to give them victory over Fulham. Manchester United’s victory over Southampton moves them up to third. Wayne Rooney makes the headlines again as his goal nets Everton their first win at Leeds in 51 years and moves Everton up to sixth. Liverpool stay top despite their unbeaten run ending at Middlesbrough, with Gareth Southgate scoring his second goal in three games. Arsenal remain second by beating Newcastle Manchester City win the Manchester derby for the first time in 13 years and United drop to fifth. Bolton snatch a point from fellow strugglers West Brom with Per Frandsen’s 89th minute equaliser denying The Baggies a second away win of the season. Wanderers stay bottom, West Brom are one place higher. West Ham drop into the bottom three, after losing a seven-goal thriller with Leeds, who score all their goals in the first half leaving The Hammers as the only side, from the Premier League to the Conference, without a home win. Arsenal win a stormy derby with Spurs to stay top. West Brom draw with Villa and are bottom of the table. Manchester United are held by West Ham and stay fifth. Jermaine Defoe rescues a point with an 86th minute equaliser but The Hammers drop a place to 19th. Liverpool are held by Sunderland, who don’t win a single corner during the game, nor do they muster a single effort on goal while Liverpool ‘rack-up’ 24 attempts on target, and drop to second. Shock of the day is Bolton’s crushing win against Leeds in which Wanderers score three times in the last 10 minutes to move off the bottom. Dennis Bergkamp nets his first goal of the season, in his 10th game, but Arsenal lose to Southampton, and remain top. Liverpool lose ground, in second place, by losing to Fulham and Everton move up to third with their sixth straight victory, over West Brom, who nevertheless move off the bottom to 19th. Newcastle score three at Old Trafford but a Ruud Van Nistelrooy ‘treble’, inside 15 minutes, helps Manchester United to victory and up to fifth. West Ham drop to rock-bottom after being hammered by Aston Villa and Dion Dublin nets his 100th Premiership goal. Bolton are 18th after earning a point against Chelsea. Arsenal recover top spot with Thierry Henry scoring twice, Robert Pires once, to beat Villa. Sunderland drop into the bottom three after losing to Chelsea, who move up to third. But Danny Dichio’s first goal of the season beats Middlesbrough to take West Brom out of the bottom three, to 17th. |
