Manchester City pay £10 million for Anelka, while United name Portuguese Carlos Queiroz as Sir Alex’s assistant.

Middlesbrough re-sign Juninho, as well as Massimo Maccarone, for £13 million. Former ’Boro coach Terry Venables becomes manager at Leeds United.

Bolton’s Gudni Bergsson postpones his planned retirement, to become a lawyer back home in Iceland, for a fourth year running and signs another one-year deal to stay at The Reebok Stadium.
Manchester United smash the British record and pay £30 million to Leeds for Rio Ferdinand. Arsene Wenger then pronounces that United paid £10 million over the odds for the England defender. Liverpool call off the proposed £8 million signing of Lee Bowyer after Gerard Houllier questions the player’s commitment.

Four years after joining Manchester United for £12.6 million, from Villa, Dwight Yorke leaves Old Trafford for Blackburn in a £2 million deal. Arsenal buy Brazilian World Cup winner Gilberto Silva for £4.5 million and the midfielder celebrates by scoring the only goal as Arsenal win The Community Shield, against Liverpool.
