| August 2002 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nets his 100th goal as Manchester United open with a win at Premiership new boys West Bromwich Albion. Liverpool beat Aston Villa while Manchester City crash to Leeds. Arsenal set a new Premiership best with their 14th consecutive top flight victory, 2–0 over promoted Birmingham, Thierry Henry is on the scoresheet. Newcastle get off to a flier with a hammering of West Ham in which Lomano Lua Lua scores twice. Ryan Giggs nets his 100th goal for the club as Manchester United draw with Chelsea. Leeds go top of the table and Mark Viduka scores again as West Brom are beaten again and drop into the bottom three. Liverpool beat Southampton and go second. Arsenal draw with West Ham and extend their unbeaten run to 23 games, with Henry and Wiltord scorers for the second match running. Fulham go third after drawing with Middlesbrough. Newcastle are shocked as a goal from former Magpie, Darren Huckerby, earns Manchester City a first win of the season. Birmingham lose to a Dwight Yorke goal for Blackburn, and are 19th. Bolton are beaten again by London opposition, Charlton, and are bottom. Arsenal romp to victory over West Brom. Henry doesn’t score but Wiltord does, twice, taking his three-game tally to four. Jason McAteer scores Sunderland’s first goal of the campaign and it’s enough for a shock victory over leaders Leeds United. Villa get their first goal, and victory, when Darius Vassell’s strike is enough to beat Manchester City. Tottenham go top of the table when a 90th minute Teddy Sheringham penalty beats Southampton and sends The Saints down to 19th place. Birmingham earn their first win of the season and a second successive defeat for Leeds drops them down to fourth. Nicholas Anelka scores a hat-trick as Manchester City beat Everton, though some sources give the Frenchman’s third goal to Tomas Radzinski. A Darren Moore goal earns West Brom their first-ever Premiership victory, over Fulham, to take The Baggies up to 18th. West Ham lose to Charlton and go bottom. Spurs pay Leeds £7 million for Robbie Keane while Sunderland pay £8 million for Rangers’ Tore Andre Flo. The Norwegian then scores on his debut in the draw with Manchester United but it’s Roy Keane who makes the headlines, with the 11th red card of his career, for elbowing Jason McAteer, allegedly, for comments the Sunderland player made about parts of Keane’s book. |
