| October 2001 Dion Dublin becomes the sixth Premiership player to have a red card rescinded this season. The row between the Premier League and the PFA gathers momentum as the governing body claim their £10 million offer, per annum, is reasonable. Liverpool’s draw with Leeds is overshadowed by the news that Gerard Houllier is rushed to hospital, after his halftime teamtalk, for heart surgery after complaining of chest pains. Leeds stay top, Liverpool seventh. Manchester United remain third after beating Sunderland. Thierry Henry scores his seventh goal of the season as Arsenal beat Southampton to stay second, The Saints drop to 17th. Leicester remain bottom after a fourth successive scoreless game, defeat by Chelsea, who go sixth. Blackburn hit the highest score of the campaign, with seven different scorers, as they swamp West Ham. Hammers' Michael Carrick contributes with an own goal that helps dump them to 19th. Bolton add another surprise to their best-ever Premiership season when they beat Manchester United, Michael Ricketts hitting the 84th minute winner, to move up to sixth but United stay third. Arsenal, with Henry scoring again, are held by Blackburn, but remain second. Liverpool move up to fourth on the back of a stunning Robbie Fowler hat-trick that helps sink Leicester, who stay bottom. Some consolation for The Foxes as Dennis Wise nets the side’s first goal in five games. Southampton drop to one place off the bottom after losing to West Ham, who leap out of the bottom three, to 16th. Fabrizio Ravanelli’s fifth goal of the season earns a point against Charlton but The Rams stay 18th. Aston Villa drop to fifth after losing to Everton and Peter Schmeichel makes the headlines with yet another career goal, from a 90th minute volley, following a corner. Leeds march on in pole position despite being held by Chelsea. Southampton sack Stuart Gray. Aston Villa beat Bolton to top the Premiership for the first time in three years. Leeds are held by Manchester United and drop to second, Fergie’s side fall to fifth. Arsenal drop a place to third after drawing with Sunderland. Southampton stay 19th after losing to Fulham and Leicester end the month by finally getting a point, against Blackburn, but they remain in the bottom three. |
