| September 1998 Early leaders Charlton took a reality check when they opened September with a thrashing at Manchester United while Aston Villa continued their good start with a win at home to Newcastle. Liverpool were not left behind either as their Anfield victory over Coventry kept them with the pacesetters. Arsenal fell down to ninth, the lowest they would be all season, with a goalless draw at Chelsea. Aston Villa went top of the table when they won their fourth consecutive game, at home to Wimbledon, but Liverpool missed the chance to join them when they were beaten at West Ham. Derby County went second in the table when they won their third game in a row, at home to Leicester, continuing their six game unbeaten start to the season. At the other end of the table Southampton’s losing streak, from the start of the campaign, went to five with a mauling at Newcastle that left them rooted to the foot of the table. Coventry were just one place above after Newcastle made it nine goals and six points inside eight days with a 5–1 win at Highfield Road. Alan Shearer helped himself to four of those goals and finished the month with a brace in three consecutive games with the goals that registered a home win over Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile Shearer’s former club Blackburn completed the bottom three when they could only draw at Everton. |
