Coca-Cola League Cup
Chelsea 2 Middlesbrough 0
Chelsea won the last Coca-Cola League Cup with a repeat of the previous season’s FA Cup Final against a ’Boro side with Paul Gascoigne making his debut as a second-half substitute but his main contribution to the game was a booking. ‘Gazza’ gave his losers medal to Craig Hignett who had played all the games up to the final. The game was scoreless at the interval and at 90 minutes but five minutes into extra-time Frank Sinclair put Chelsea ahead. Twelve minutes later Roberto Di Matteo made it 2–0.

FA Cup Final
Arsenal 2 Newcastle United 0
Arsenal clinched the ‘Double’ with victory over a disappointing Newcastle United. The Gunners took the lead through a Marc Overmars goal, midway through the first half and sealed the game, halfway through the second period when Nicolas Anelka scored number two. The closest Newcastle came to scoring was when Alan Shearer hit the post but Chelsea were never really troubled and made Ruud Gullit the first foreign manager to win the FA Cup.
